什么是 Tarsnap?
Tarsnap 的开发始于 2006 年 9 月，当时作者、科林·珀西瓦尔博士认为现有在线备份服务不够理想，于是决定打造更好的服务。经过两年多的开发和私有测试，Tarsnap 于 2008 年 11 月正式进入公开测试阶段，并于 2009 年 2 月实现盈利。2011 年 9 月，Tarsnap Backup Inc. 在加拿大不列颠哥伦比亚省注册成立。
Tarsnap 客户端代码基于开源的 libarchive 归档处理库构建。尽管 Tarsnap 本身并未采用开源许可证发布，但其通过向开源社区贡献 bug 修复和功能改进（已提交 40 次及以上）以及尽可能发布全新代码（例如 scrypt 密钥派生函数和文件加密代码），回馈开源社区。
目前，Tarsnap 服务使用亚马逊网络服务（Amazon Web Services）的基础设施提供。
