什么是 Debian?

Debian项目是由一群志同道合的个人组成的协会，致力于创建一个自由的操作系统。我们所创建的操作系统被称为Debian。

操作系统是一组使计算机运行的基本程序和实用工具。操作系统的核心是内核。内核是计算机中最基础的程序，负责所有基本管理任务，并允许启动其他程序。

目前，Debian系统使用Linux内核或FreeBSD内核。Linux是由林纳斯·托瓦兹发起并由全球数千名程序员支持的软件。FreeBSD是一个包含内核及其他软件的操作系统。

然而，目前正在推进为其他内核提供Debian的支持，主要是Hurd内核。Hurd是一组运行在微内核（如Mach）之上的服务器，用于实现各种功能。Hurd是由GNU项目开发的自由软件。

构成操作系统基础的大量工具主要来自GNU项目；因此有了这些名称：GNU/Linux、GNU/kFreeBSD和GNU/Hurd。这些工具同样是自由的。

当然，人们真正需要的是应用软件：帮助他们完成各类任务的程序，从编辑文档到经营业务，再到玩游戏或编写更多软件。Debian自带超过51000个软件包（以方便安装格式打包的预编译软件）、包管理器（APT）以及其他工具，可轻松在成千上万台计算机上管理数千个软件包，如同安装单个应用程序一样简单。全部内容均为免费。
