最新版本为由 Hyperion Entertainment 开发的 AmigaOS 4.1，该公司于 2009 年从 Amiga Inc. 获得 AmigaOS 3.1 的独家、永久性全球授权，用于开发和推广 AmigaOS 4 及后续版本。
AmigaOS 是基于抢占式多任务内核 Exec 的单用户操作系统，包含对 Amiga 硬件的抽象、名为 AmigaDOS 的磁盘操作系统、称为 Intuition 的窗口系统 API 以及名为 Workbench 的桌面文件管理器。
系统还集成了名为 AmigaShell 的命令行界面（CLI），尽管其完全基于窗口操作。CLI 与 Workbench 组件具有相同权限。值得注意的是，AmigaOS 不具备任何内置内存保护机制。
AmigaOS 由两部分组成：名为 Kickstart 的固件组件和通常被称为 Workbench 的软件部分。在 AmigaOS 3.1 之前，Kickstart 和 Workbench 通常以匹配版本一同发布。然而自 AmigaOS 3.5（Commodore 倒闭后的首个版本）起，仅更新软件部分，Kickstart 的作用有所弱化。固件更新仍可通过系统启动时打补丁实现。
2006 年，AmigaOS 4.0 重写，实现完全支持 PowerPC 架构。
屏幕可任意方向拖动，可在不同屏幕间拖放 Workbench 图标，新增 Amidock 版本、TrueType/OpenType 字体及支持 DivX 和 MPEG-4 的视频播放器。
在 AmigaOS 4.1 中，新增启动偏好设置功能，取代了 WBStartup 文件夹；其他改进包括适配更高分辨率的新图标集、含阴影效果的新窗口主题、具备真正透明度的 AmiDock、可缩放图标以及支持自动更新的 AmigaOS。
